Objectives for 2004
In collaboration with States, nonprofits and industries, DoD wants to reduce statute barriers and enhance the ability of military families to transition to new locations.

Governor Bush Signs Legislation Supporting Our Military; Bills Focused on Military Families and Veterans Set National Standard
Governor Jeb Bush today signed into law legislation aimed at enhancing the services the state offers to military families in Florida. Active duty military, Florida Guardsman, veterans and their families joined the Governor at the bill signing.

Senator Alexander Praises Launch of "USA4MilitaryFamilies"
FT. CAMPBELL, May 14, 2004-U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) praised the launch of "USA4MilitaryFamiles" a new national collaboration between state governments and the Department of Defense (DoD) to improve the quality of life for military families, with special consideration given to Guard and reserve families who may not live near a military installation.

Governor Dirk Kempthorne convened a meeting with top Pentagon officials
On May 14, Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne convened a meeting with top Pentagon officials at the Idaho National Guard headquarters at Boise?s Gowen Field. Family support issues were a leading topic of the discussions, which featured Charles Abell, Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, and his team from the Department of Defense.

DoD Team Assists Idaho Guard Family Support Leaders
As a result of discussions with Governor Kempthorne's staff, the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Military Community and Family Policy) provided a team of subject-matter experts to supplement the training of 60 Family Support Leaders

In-State Tuition Expands by Three States
The Governors of Washington State, Maryland and Virginia recently signed legislation that expanded in-state tuition coverage for family members who remain behind when the Service member is transferred out of state.
